In June and July of '97 I had the pleasure of working as the Special Effects Supervisor for the Visual Effects Department of HBO's From the Earth to the Moon . This is a twelve part series documenting the U.S. space program. Tom Hanks was the Executive Producer.
I brought Charles Cooley and Tom Seymour on board as my crew. We were reunited on this show with a number of other people who worked on Dante's Peak .
We worked for several weeks at the motion control facility in Van Nuys, California doing our planning, testing, prep work, and building the rigs. Then we spent a week shooting on location in the desert near Palmdale, California.
Our shots included smoke and flame elements for the launch sequences, the crash of the L.L.R.V., and shots of the Mercury Redstone and Saturn V rockets in flight.
